The ELM 327 USB Code Scanner - Essential for Any Car Owner

At a mere four ounces, The ELM 327 USB code scanner doesn't have the appearance of being particularly important, but it's actually one of the most powerful and essential tools for any automotive tool set, whether professional or just the do it yourself garage toolbox.

Many of us will remember those long gone days of the classic " shade tree mechanic ", when all you needed was a few wrenches and a mechanical inclination to fix just about anything on an automobile. Until on board diagnostics became commercially available, those days stayed long-gone. But with the ELM 327 USB the shade tree mechanic is back in action, and even better than before!

Computers are integrated into every aspect of vehicle performance. Until the advent of technologies like the ELM 327 USB OBD2, this caused an insurmountable obstacle for do it yourself auto repair. But now all you have to do is plug in, get the fault code, and then use your laptop or pc to diagnose the exact problem. Anyone that remembers the old days of diagnostics will find this to be child's play. Any time the engine light comes on just plug it in and let it do all the work for you!

Just "turning off the engine light" isn't the only thing this tool does though. It can display just about any current status on your vehicle. Engine RPM, Coolant temperature, fuel system status and pressure, timing advance, air flow rate, vehicle speed, intake manifold pressure and a whole host of other items are instantly available.

Auto repair isn't the only use for this valuable tool. Even if you don't have any intention of working on your vehicle, by determining exactly what's wrong before going to a mechanic and checking pricing, you can avoid classic problems of overcharging. Never again will you have to trust that the technical jargon you hear from the mechanic is legit -with this tool you are a consumer empowered with all the information you need to get a fair deal.

Will it Work on Your Car?

Every vehicle manufactured since the year 1996 are required to be OBD II equipped. So if you have a '96 or newer model, the answer is definitely yes. If older, it still may be compliant. It's fairly simple to determine whether or not your older model can use the ELM 327 USB.

The easiest way is to look under the hood of the car. There will be a sticker that says " OBD II compliant ". If you see that sticker then you know you can use the ELM 327. If the sticker may have been worn off or otherwise not readable or evident, you can look around and under the dashboard for the OBD II connector.

This is a "repair tool" that, while essential for mechanics, should really be in anyone's garage if they own a car made since 1996. It's completely user friendly, accessible and provides all of the information you need with regard to the performance and emissions status of your vehicle. It's just too easy and convenient to know exactly how your vehicle is doing mechanically to not take advantage of this OBD2 tool.
